Nyhavn
At around 9:00 A. M we left airport to our first destination "Nyhavn". We got down at Kongens Nytrov and then we had to walk for about 5 min to reach Nyhavn. Nyhavn is a 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen, Denmark. Nyhavn was constructed by King Christian V from 1670 to 1673, dug by Swedish prisoners of war from the Dano-Swedish War 1658–1660. It is lined by brightly coloured 17th and early 18th century townhouses and bars, cafes and restaurants.
Papiroeen
Nyhavn is an amazing place and rightly the most visited by tourists. Then we walked around to the other end. The area is known as Papiroeen. The view from Papiroeen is breathtaking.
Copenhagen opera house is visible from this area.
We walked further towards Amalienborg square.
Amalienborg
Amalienborg is the home of the Danish royal family, and is located in Copenhagen, Denmark. It consists of four identical classical palace façades with rococo interiors around an octagonal courtyard. In the centre of the square is a monumental equestrian statue of Amalienborg's founder, King Frederick V.
Amalienborg is guarded day and night by Royal Life Guards. After spending some time at the palace square, we headed to The Marble Church (Frederik's Kirke) which is at a short distance.
The Marble Church
The church was designed by the architect Nicolai Eigtved in 1740 and was along with the rest of Frederiksstaden, a district of Copenhagen, intended to commemorate the 300 years jubilee of the first coronation of a member of the House of Oldenburg. Frederick's Church has the largest church dome in Scandinavia with a span of 31m. The dome rests on 12 columns. It is located due west of Amalienborg Palace.
Kastellet
Our next place to visit in the list was Kastellet. Kastellet is one of the best preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe. It is constructed in the form of a pentagram with bastions at its corners. A number of buildings are located within the grounds of Kastellet, including a church as well as a windmill. The area houses various military activities but it mainly serves as a public park and a historic site. King Christian IV of Denmark initiated Kastellet’s construction in 1626.
It easily takes about 2 hours to cover the entire Kastellet area. The sun came out and we witnessed some spectacular colours across the park. Next, we headed to Trinitatis church.
Trinitatis Church
Trinitatis Church is located in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It is part of the 17th century Trinitatis Complex, which includes the Rundetarn astronomical observatory tower and the Copenhagen University Library, in addition to the church. Built in the time of Christian IV, the church initially served the students of Copenhagen University.
We had lunch in a nearby eatery. After lunch, we headed to Islands Brygge.
Islands Brygge
Islands Brygge is a harbourfront area in central Copenhagen, Denmark, located on the north-western coast of Amager. Established through a series of land reclamations from the 1880s, it served both military, residential, industrial and dockland purposes.
Next, through Noreport station, we started walking towards Christanshavn. Walk is about 2kms. On the way we saw Tivoli Gardens (An amusement park) and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is an art museum in Copenhagen, Denmark. The collection is built around the personal collection of Carl Jacobsen (1842–1914), the son of the founder of the Carlsberg Breweries.
Church of our Saviour
Once we reached Christianshavn, First we visited Church of our saviour. Church of Our Saviour (Vor Frelsers Kirke) is a baroque church in Copenhagen, Denmark, most famous for its helix spire with an external winding staircase that can be climbed to the top, offering extensive views over central Copenhagen. When Christian IV planned Christianshavn in 1617, it was intended as an independent merchant's town on the island of Amager and it therefore needed a church. A temporary church was inaugurated in 1639 but construction of the present Church of Our Saviour, the design of Lambert van Haven, did not start until 1682.
Christianshavn
Christianshavn is a neighbourhood in Copenhagen, Denmark. Part of the Indre By District, it is located on several artificial islands between the islands of Zealand and Amager and separated from the rest of the city centre by the Inner Harbour. It was founded in the early 17th century by Christian IV as part of his extension of the fortifications of Copenhagen.
Christiansborg Palace
Next, we walked to Christiansborg Palace which is 10 min walk from Christianshavn. Christiansborg Palace is a palace and government building on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It is the seat of the Danish Parliament, the Danish Prime Minister's Office and the Supreme Court of Denmark. Also, several parts of the palace are used by the Danish monarch, including the Royal Reception Rooms, the Palace Chapel and the Royal Stables. The palace is thus home to the three supreme powers: the executive power, the legislative power, and the judicial power. It is the only building in the world that houses all three of a country's branches of government.
Finally after an exhaustive day out at Copenhagen, it was time to get back to the airport. We walked back to Noreport Station and then to airport. On the way back, we saw the city town hall.
We reached Schiphol at 9:00 P. M. We had dinner at the airport and then headed back to our room. Definitely, Copenhagen is one among the most beautiful cities in the world.
